Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure to the median nerve in the wrist. Symptoms generally include numbness, tingling, weakness, or pain in the hands, fingers, or thumb. Sometimes the pain can even extend down the forearm. You are at risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome if you are obese, pregnant, or suffering from diabetes or arthritis. Prior wrist injuries, especially fractures, can also lead to the development of carpal tunnel syndrome. To avoid developing carpal tunnel syndrome, follow these helpful tips:
Exercise. Maintaining a healthy weight can help eliminate and prevent carpal tunnel syndrome. Exercising can also help control diabetes and arthritis, which are two other common causes of carpal tunnel syndrome.
Improve ergonomics. If carpal tunnel syndrome arises because of frequent typing or computer use, redesign your workspace so that it is more ergonomic. Make sure your chair and desk are at the right heights for your body to work comfortably at the keyboard. Proper body mechanics can save you the pain of carpal tunnel.
Evaluate your routine. Take a look at your daily activities to see what things you do that may cause carpal tunnel syndrome. Then take steps to either correct that behavior or approach it in a way that will reduce the stress on your hands and wrists.
Take frequent breaks. Frequent breaks while performing activities that put you at risk can help you avoid carpal tunnel syndrome. While typing or using a computer, try to take a break every hour for fifteen minutes. Also, change positions as frequently as possible to reduce repetitive stress on your hands and wrists.
